About Me

I'm a Post-Baccalaureate Fellow at the Center for Advanced Imaging at Harvard University. I work on computational imaging and histopathology related research with Dr. Dushan Wadduwage and protein engineering with Dr. Sergey Ovchinnikov. My interests lie at the nexus of machine learning and oncology, particularly in developing interpretable and robust machine learning methods to enable new discoveries to accelerate our battle against cancer.


I completed my undergraduate engineering degree with First Class honors specializing in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering (ENTC), University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. My final year thesis project was on developing an "Interpretable Multi-Modal Sleep Monitoring System using Ear-EEG and EOG" under supervision of Dr. Anjula De Silva and Dr. Chamira Edussooriya, along with Dr. Simon Lind Kappel from Aarhus University. In my final year, I also contribute to Harvard-MIT collaborative research as a remote undergraduate research fellow at Harvard University. During this time I developed a forward model agnostic image reconstruction using physics augmented u-net for DEEP Temporal Focusing Microscope (DEEP-TFM) and other Structured Illumination Microscopes (SIM). I pursued my remote research internship at the University of Melbourne, Australia with Dr. Sam John, where contributed to a study on Parkinson's disease using mice models by developing a segmentation software to accurately segment retinal layers from OCT images.

October 2022 A knowledge distillation framework for enhancing ear-eeg based sleep staging with scalp-eeg data preprint released.
September 2022 Presented my final year thesis project to the Center for Ear EEG at Aarhus University, Denmark.
September 2022 Presented my final year thesis project at the exhibition session in "AI and Machine Learning in Healthcare Summer School" by CCAIM.
August 2022 "Towards Interpretable Sleep Stage Classification Using Cross-Modal Transformers" preprint released.
August 2022 Served as a reviewer at ECCV 2022: L2ID Workshop.
July 2022 Joined Center for Advanced Imaging at Harvard University as a Post-Baccalaureate Research Fellow.
January 2022 Joint first authored paper accepted at ICASSP 2022.
October 2021 Virtually attended and presented our ECoG paper EMBC 2021.
September 2021 Virtually attended International Conference for Image Processing (ICIP) 2021, Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
September 2021 Our team NFP_Undercover emerged second runners-up at Video and Image Processing (VIP) Cup 2021 in International Conference for Image Processing (ICIP) 2021, Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
August 2021 Our team NFP_Undercover was qualified to the finals of Video and Image Processing (VIP) Cup 2021 at International Conference for Image Processing (ICIP) 2021, Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
July 2021 Joined Centre for Advanced Imaging at Harvard University as a Remote Visiting Undergraduate Research Fellow , under supervision of Dr. Dushan. N. Wadduwage from Wadduwage Lab, focusing on deep learning based image reconstruction algorithms for microscopy.
July 2021First Paper (First Author) titled "Decoding of Hand Gestures from Electrocorticography with LSTM Based Deep Neural Network” was accepted at the 43rd EMBC,2021.
July 2021 Appointed as a Council Member of IEEE EMBS Student Branch Chapter at University of Moratuwa.
January 2021 Our BraiNeoCare research group from theBRIC took part in the CASS 2020-2021 Student Design Competition and successfully completed the first phase (country-level) of the competition and got selected to the second phase (regional-level).
November 2020 Started my research internship under supervision of Dr. Sam John, Senior Lecturer in Neural Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Melbourne.
October 2020 Started my 6-month industrial internship as Trainee Research Engineer at Synergen Technology Labs (Pvt) Ltd.
October 2020 Joined the Biomedical Research and Innovation Collective (theBRIC) group as a biomedical researcher.
October 2020 Our team wanderers emerged IEEE SMC Winners at BR4IN.IO Hackathon, at IEEE System, Man and Cybernetics Conference (SMC) 2020, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
July 2020 Appointed as Secretary of IEEE EMBS Student Branch Chapter at University of Moratuwa.
May 2020 Commenced 6-month mentorship program under Dr. Rukshan Batuwita from Google, through ScholarX 2020 program organized by the Sustainable Education Foundation (SEF)
January 2020 Our team wanderers emerged champions at Mora Ventures 5.0, organized by the Entrepreneurship Society of University of Moratuwa together with the University Business Linkage Cell (UBLC).
December 2019 Our team wanderers emrged champions at Brainstorm (Nationanwide Biomedical Design Competition) 2019.
December 2019 Our team KIDKIT achieved runners-up at IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka (INSL) 2019 organized by IEEE Sri Lankan Section.
November 2019 Won gold medal in Kumite under 60kg senior category at Battle of the Fists - Inter University Karate Championship.
September 2019 Team wanderers became champions at the Sri Lankan IoT hackathon (SLIOT) 2019. Also, we demonstrated our product at Techno exhibition 2019.
September 2019 Team wanderers achieved runners-up at the Hackx 2019, the Inter University Startup Challenge organised by Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Science, University of Moratuwa.
May 2019 Appointed as Assitant Treasurer of IEEE EMBS Student Branch Chapter at University of Moratuwa.
April 2019 Started my 2-month research internship at Centre for Biomedical Innovation (CEBI).
March 2019 Awarded university colours for Karate.
November 2018 Represented university karate team at inter university karate championship and won silver in Kumite under -55kg senior category.
November 2017 Won Bronze medal at National Karate Championship in Kumite under -60kg black belt category.
September 2017 Started my undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering at University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
